Background
The family business “Steil Kranarbeiten” from Trier is celebrating its impressive 100th anniversary this year. Since 1924, the company has developed from a small business for the construction and repair of steam boilers into one of the leading crane service providers in Germany and the number one in the Saar-Lor-Lux region.
The beginnings: from steam boilers to towing services
Michael Steil founded the company in 1924, specializing in the construction and repair of steam boilers. After the Second World War, he handed the business over to his five sons. Birgit's father, Heinrich Steil, continued to run the company with innovative ideas and switched from vehicle construction to towing services. With a converted American truck, the company began towing military vehicles, laying the foundations for today's success.
Growth and expansion
In 1960, the company moved into its own property in Loebstrasse. Birgit Steil took over the company in 1989 and led it into a new era with the support of Karl Trippel, who later became her partner. Under her leadership, the company continued to expand, opening branches in Wittlich and Luxembourg and also focusing on the construction of wind turbines.
Modern challenges and successes
Today, “Steil Kranarbeiten” has 110 cranes, 300 employees and seven bases. The strategic focus on two main pillars - regional crane work and wind energy - has proved particularly successful in times of crisis. The regional business has compensated for lost sales in the wind power sector and vice versa.
Future in family hands
Birgit's sons, Daniel and Christopher, have also been part of the management team since 2022, ensuring continuity and the continued existence of the family business. Birgit Steil's discipline and structure, combined with her sons' innovative spirit and drive, promise a continued successful future for “Steil Kranarbeiten”.
